Volunteer
Volunteer teachers and tutors are needed to teach janitors and other low-wage workers basic Computer Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). To volunteer, contact Laura Medina at (213)673-2110 or by email at laura@buildingskills.org.
Volunteer teachers and tutors gain experience teaching Survival ESL or Computer Literacy in a learner-centered environment. While teachers teach small classes of 8-12 students, tutors either assist within classes to provide more personalized attention to each student or work one-on-one with students outside the classroom setting. Teachers and tutors provide encouragement and build the workers’ confidence to learn, while helping immigrant adults gain familiarity with United States culture and resources. Most importantly, they participate in an exciting, community-based effort to make a difference in the lives of immigrants and other low-wage workers.
Skills: Patience and experience working with diverse populations. You must be dependable and able to commit to a set schedule. If you are bilingual, we will put your Spanish or other language skills to good use!
Benefits: As a volunteer at BSP you will receive training and acquire skills in teaching or tutoring ESL or computer literacy, gain knowledge about the issues facing newcomer families, and learn about the social services and other resources available to immigrants and low-wage workers in Santa Clara and other Bay Area counties.
