Floor Care Training - DMS

Mario, floor care technician

Building Skills Partnership (BSP) is proud to partner with industry employers who support the professionalization of a certified workforce through an industry career lattice. Together with BSP, DMS Facility Services is an exemplary leader of a labor-management partnership that facilitates this industry career lattice to support employee training, upskilling, and certification while being responsive to the needs of industries, the economy, and their employees.

In collaboration with DMS, property service workers in Los Angeles and Sacramento completed BSP’s Floor Care program in the Fall of 2023.

The Floor Care program, created in partnership with industry representatives, offers a 12-hour classroom curriculum in addition to a 3-week on-the job-training.

BSP's Floor Care Program aims to provide workers with information on the crucial role of a floor care worker in a commercial property, as well as the use of proper health and safety practices when handling floor care machinery and chemicals on different types of surfaces.

Additionally, the program provides workers with hands-on experience to gain the skills needed to become better candidates for Floor Care Technician positions.

“In the BSP Floor Care program, I learned a lot of new English words and how to communicate better with my supervisors, since they now need more from me besides the general janitorial duties”, said Mario Estrada, a floor technician with DMS, who initially participated in the program as a participant and has returned as a Peer Trainer.

“I take care of all the floors in the building, from shampooing, waxing, mopping, and buffing”, Mario continued.

Mario is a BSP Peer Trainer for Floor Care

As a BSP Peer Trainer who served as a mentor during the on-the-job training component,  Mario served a critical role by training a fellow program participant in the comprehensive certification program.

He encourages his peers to “keep on learning and keep asking questions so you can get ahead, and take all of the BSP classes you can.”

A valued industry employer, DMS Facility Services has been partnering with BSP since its inception in 2007. The labor-management collaboration offers industry driven Workforce Development Programs to responsible employers and their workforce. DMS Facility Services is a great example of this high-road partnership.

For the last 50 years, DMS Facility Services has been operating within the national real estate community. From inception through current day, the firm has experienced steady growth, an expanded footprint and greater depth in services through strategic service and client targeting.

With janitorial maintenance being one of the company’s service lines, DMS clients consist of multi-tenant office buildings and corporate campus facilities.

To bring industry employers, workers, and partners together, BSP develops curriculum and trains thousands of workers statewide. BSP's innovative workforce development programs address the needs from workers, industry and labor for skill training.

California and the CWDB are committed to a High Road vision for the state’s workforce development system that embodies the principles of job quality, worker voice, equity, and environmental sustainability. Implementing this vision through policy, programs, and other practices will benefit workers, job-seekers, and industry as well as the state’s workforce development system.

BSP is grateful to valued industry partner, DMS for their commitment to the success of this unique program for property service workers! A special thanks to BSP’s workforce development supporters, including WES Mariam Assefa Fund and Crankstart.
