Connecting Families with Nature and Environmental Justice
BSP families recently explored Kendall-Frost Marsh and Mission Bay alongside our partners at the San Diego Bird Alliance, UC San Diego, the California Coastal Commission, and ReWild Mission Bay.
During the outing, families engaged in hands-on activities like water quality testing and learned about the critical role wetlands play in supporting biodiversity and maintaining healthy ecosystems. Marshes like Kendall-Frost serve as natural buffers against flooding, filter pollutants from water, and provide habitat for a wide variety of plants, birds, fish, and invertebrates. Participants observed native plants that help stabilize soil, discussed migratory birds that rely on the marsh, and explored how wetlands act as a carbon sink to help mitigate climate change.
Families also discussed the local impacts of sea level rise, learning how rising tides and human development can threaten these delicate habitats. By connecting ecological science to real-world environmental challenges, BSP helps families understand the importance of conservation and stewardship in their own communities.
Experiences like these foster intergenerational learning, strengthen community leadership, and nurture a shared commitment to environmental justice. We are grateful to our partners for creating these meaningful opportunities for our students and families to learn, explore, and grow together.
