Palo Alto - Healthy Eating, Healthy Living

As part of BSP’s ongoing Health & Wellness Charla series, a recent session in Palo Alto centered on nutrition and affordable grocery shopping. The event gathered a group of BSP participants eager to learn how to eat well on a budget.

The session, guided by BSP Community Advancement Coordinator Cecilia, offered more than just basic tips; it provided practical and empowering knowledge that participants could immediately apply to their daily lives.

Through BSP’s Health and Wellness curriculum, the instructor explained the differences between nutritious and less healthy food options, helping participants understand how their everyday food choices could impact their long-term health.

The instructor also emphasized that eating healthy doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. By teaching participants what to look for, Cecilia showed them that nourishing, wholesome food can be both accessible and affordable.

To put their newfound knowledge into practice, participants joined Cecilia for a guided grocery store tour at Cardenas Market. Their challenge was to create a healthy meal for at least one person using just $5.

This hands-on activity not only reinforced the key lessons of the Charla but also helped build the participants’ confidence in making informed, budget-friendly choices.

The results were impressive. Participant Orlando managed to prepare a traditional Colombian dish for only $2.90, while Silvia spent $3.79 on a comforting caldo de pollo for herself and her daughter. Elizabeth used $4.89 to prepare a hearty lentejas lunch for her family. Each dish demonstrated not just creativity, but also the nutritional insights gained from the session.

This activity reinforced the Charla's core message, that healthy eating is achievable, even on a tight budget and provided participants with real-life tools to make smarter food choices.

By learning how to save money while purchasing healthy, affordable groceries, they are taking steps toward better health and financial stability.

Choosing cost-effective, nutritious foods not only helps avoid the financial burden of expensive, unhealthy options but also reduces the risk of future medical expenses.

With BSP’s practical guidance, participants gained valuable skills and the confidence to make lasting, positive changes for themselves and their families. In a clear and supportive approach, we empower participants to take control of their health in a sustainable and manageable way.
