Building Skills Partnership Scholars Join Nonviolent Action Training in Los Angeles

On July 10, Building Skills Partnership (BSP) scholars and college students participated in a transformative Nonviolent Action Training in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (@thelafed). The training offered vital tools to help young leaders navigate complex, real-life situations—especially those involving immigration enforcement (ICE).

Our Family and Education College Readiness (FECR) coordinator joined the students as they learned how to de-escalate tense interactions, advocate for themselves and others, and stand up for their communities through peaceful action. These skills are essential for students striving to become agents of change on campus and beyond.

Participants also had the opportunity to connect with staff from the Miguel Contreras Foundation (@miguelcontrerasfdn), and hear from powerful labor and community leaders across Los Angeles who are fighting for justice and equity.

“It was empowering to be in a room full of people committed to social justice. I walked away feeling stronger and more prepared to speak up for myself and others,” shared one BSP scholar.

We are deeply grateful for their commitment to advancing education and equity for students and working families across Los Angeles.

At BSP, we’re proud to provide spaces where immigrant and first-gen students can grow not only academically, but as engaged, informed members of their communities.
