Building Skills Partnership x California State University San Marcos & Barrio Logan College Institute
Through BSP’s Family Engagement College Readiness (FECR) program, 45 students and family members participated in a powerful and inspiring campus visit at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM)—designed to build confidence, connection, and a strong college-going culture for first-generation families.
Participants engaged in an admissions presentation, heard directly from first-generation college students, and were especially inspired by Professor Silverio Haro, who shared his journey from working in the fields of Fresno to graduating from Harvard. His story reinforced a powerful message: higher education is possible and within reach.
Families learned about the wide range of academic, financial, and student support resources available at CSUSM, asked thoughtful questions, and left feeling more equipped to support their children’s educational goals. What began as a campus tour became a transformative experience—students left imagining themselves on campus, while parents walked away empowered and informed.
We are grateful to CSUSM and Barrio Logan College Institute for welcoming our community and partnering with us to expand access, opportunity, and pathways to higher education for first-generation students and families.
