ESL Graduation

The class completed 160 hours of English language communication thanks to the strong support from their employer. During the graduation ceremony, students reflected on their experience in the recycling class, which inspired them to repurpose certificate holders to display their BSP certificates. They organized themselves to redesign the holders by printing the BSP and SEIU logos—an initiative entirely led by the workers. One lead janitor, who once needed translation support, now confidently translates for her entire team. Stanford also expressed deep appreciation for the uniqueness and impact of this program.

Together, we’ve built more than a class—we’ve created a learning community. When instructors teach beyond the curriculum and center human development first, trust and belonging transform the learning experience. When students feel safe to speak, make mistakes, and be themselves, language becomes connection, and confidence becomes possibility.
